Day Nine: The Narrows Pt. 2: Canoeing

Today was our last field trip, and it was a pretty big one. We spent pretty much the entire time canoeing. We were tasked with listening deliberately today. Wherever and whenever we could, we had to try to focus on a single sound. The sounds I often found myself focusing on were bird calls.

Before we left, we watched a TED Talk about the importance of listening. From this, we were given our assignment to listen deliberately. After we did that, we wrote our writing pieces for the day. Today's writing piece was meant to be a poem about a recipe for a body of water of our choosing. I chose a nice river. You can read the poem at the bottom.

Once we left, the bus dropped us off at a canoe rental depot. We all got life jackets then got on a bus towing a huge container of kayaks. Another small bus came with us with kayak paddles. Once we got to the narrows, we got into two lines with our kayaks waiting to get in the river. Once I got in I was relatively calm. I was expecting it to be scary for some reason, but it really wasn't at all. However, I got stuck within the first few minutes. There was a tree near the shore and I got kind of beached there. I had to turn my boat around and go through a gap in the tree's branches backwards.

There were a lot of rope swings where we stopped and swam around for a bit. However, I beached myself too often for my liking. My kayak seemed to turn towards the shallowest portions and beach itself, so that greatly slowed my progress. Along with, there were a lot of biting flies that wouldn't stop bothering me for some portions of the trip. If I go kayaking again, I will be sure to bring bug repellent in the future. Despite this, I had fun today.

To Make a River

To make a river it takes dirt and water Maybe some fish and plants And insects. You can add sand or frogs If dirt or fish are few.
