Day 6: Carriage Hill
Today was a fun day. I was not expecting it to be as fun as it was, but it was a pleasant surprise. Today, we went to Carriage Hill, a 19th century farm that has been adapted into a park.
Before we left, we learned a bit about 19th century farms, namely the types of people and animals that lived there and the type of work that was done on those farms. Once we did this, we were tasked with writing a short poem or narrative from the perspective of something on one of those farms. I wrote a poem from the perspective of an adventurous chicken, and you can read it at the end of this post.
After that, we traveled to Carriage Hill. I think the reason I enjoyed going to Carriage Hill so much is that, like Cox Arboretum, we were effectively allowed to roam freely throughout the park. However, this time, I didn't travel around nearly as much. At the start, we stopped briefly at some sheep and a goat in an enclosure. I even got to pet one of the sheep, and its fur was nice and soft.

Once that was all said and done, we were allowed to effectively wander. I joined a small group of four and headed to one of the barns. There was a lamb and her mother inside, but what attracted more people was the horses. I always seem to forget how big horses are. These particular ones were taller than me at the head, and they just looked powerful. I respected that, and treated them as such. I even fed them some clover from a nearby patch. I think there were about five of them.

There was also a Country Shop there, and I bought some candy for about $2.50. I estimate that if I bought it at Walgreens or another corner store like it, that same amount would've costed $4 at least, so that's nice. After we all ate lunch, most of us went to a creek in the area and skipped rocks. My friend Sam also caught a crayfish. All in all, I'd say today was a fun day.
Cameron the Brave Chicken
I’m just a hen. My name is Cameron. And I like to explore.
But when the sun falls, Nobody has the gall To stay out of the hen house.
At night, the coyotes roam wild. And none but a fool or a child Would dare stay out at night.
But tonight, I’m no coward Tonight, I have the power To boldly face all the hens’ fears.
Farmer Roger will be mad, But hey, this isn’t that bad! Maybe we don’t have to stay inside.
Wait, what’s that sound? My fears have become profound. I think there are coyotes after all.
I had no time to flee. I spent the night in a big tree. And that’s how I survived the night.
